We’ve only worked there once before, we breezed through. It’s designed as a beginners instance where you learn how to group. We aren’t beginners, though we will be learning new rolls.

I need a break from WoW. I still enjoy playing with the boys, but solo play has become painful. With Mark losing his account there isn’t much else we can do. We are changing our lineup a little. Mike will play Priest. He’s been the Mage the last two times so he was due a change. Mark and I have been good Priests, in our own minds. I expect Mike will do a good job as well.

Mark says he wants a 60 Warrior so he’s going for that again. I’ve got a 60 Warrior already, so I’ll be playing Mage. My highest Mage to date is 18 so it will be interesting. I’m confident I’ll enjoy it.

Usually, we start together and level up from scratch. We’ve all did the beginning content over and over. It’s geared for solo play and gives us little challenge. We are trying something different. We’ll meet up at 14-15 and run Ragefire Chasm instance in Orgrimmar. It’s rated for levels 13-18. A group of three 14s should get their butts kicked in there just fine.

I started my Mage today and dinged level 10 a little while ago. I’ll be out of town four days so the boys have a chance to catch up. I’m not sure I can get to 14 before our next fight night. We’ll just have to take it as it comes. We can always do an evening of battlegrounds. Or, it’s been suggested, we could dance for two hours.

<rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:trackback="http://madskills.com/public/xml/rss/module/trackback/"> <rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.whirly.org/wow-bet-your-bottom-dollar/" dc:identifier="http://www.whirly.org/wow-bet-your-bottom-dollar/" dc:title="WoW: Bet your bottom dollar" trackback:ping="http://www.whirly.org/wow-bet-your-bottom-dollar/trackback/" /> </rdf:RDF>

WoW: Fun and Frustration
Posted in on October 17th, 2006

Mark, with his 17 Mage, went into the battleground (BG) with Mike and my 19 Hunter and Rogue for the first time Monday. Man it was fun. I’m not sure he enjoyed it, but he’s polite enough to pretend. It was different with three of us working together even if we did it poorly these first few times. Mike is getting good and, though I’m not, I’m twinked to high heaven. With the Mage’s stuff it felt like we had potential.

Sheeping people will get you some determined attention, as Mark learned a few times. Also, at 17, he was THE target of choice. We couldn’t quite get his attackers dead fast enough to save him most of the time. He did well though, coming in middle, score wise, on all three BG we ran. We also did some good work running the flag and hunting their flag carrier.

Mark has given up on his old account. Blizzard refuses to respond to his emails. We pretend it doesn’t matter, but it does. He’s been playing that account since release and now it’s all gone. While Mike and I still have all our toons, many of them are effectively dead as well as they exist only to play with Mark’s characters.

I feel like a chump continuing to give Blizzard money. I’ve put a lot of thought into what we could do instead of playing WoW. There is nothing. What chumps we are. Tomorrow is Alaska day. Not everybody celebrates that fact, I do. Maybe I’ll re-visit the list of potential candidates. Even if we only canceled our accounts for a month we’d be making a statement. I’m sure they would miss the $45 and get their act together.

<rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:trackback="http://madskills.com/public/xml/rss/module/trackback/"> <rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.whirly.org/wow-fun-and-frustration/" dc:identifier="http://www.whirly.org/wow-fun-and-frustration/" dc:title="WoW: Fun and Frustration" trackback:ping="http://www.whirly.org/wow-fun-and-frustration/trackback/" /> </rdf:RDF>

WoW: I’m not so smart, as if I needed proof
Posted in on October 12th, 2006

I only ran one BG last night. Although we were made up of Scouts with a few Grunts, and they were Grunt level and higher, and even though they were all from the same server (a very bad sign), things initially looked hopeful.

It was suggested we stay together and we marched down field as a group, captured the flag and started home. For some reason the flag carrier led us to the Alliance re-spawn spot. We started fighting there. I didn’t see how that was going to help us win. It feels a little morally wrong to me as well. Re-spawn spot is the place where you take a virtual smoke, hook up with your friends and plan your next move. Turning it into a killing field ain’t right.

I was recently in a BG where we were being completely owned by Alliance. They camped our respawn spot, it was fun actually. Pop, instant fighting. They had one Warrior who would occasionally jump down the hill, hoping to lure his attackers down, then charge back up the hill no one else could climb, very impressive. Still, it ain’t right.

Last night, I was suckered off the Alliance hill. I thought I saw our flag carrier jump down, he didn’t. Eventually I died and that was the last I saw anybody on our team in a group larger than 2.

They, on the other hand, I never saw in a group smaller than 5. It doesn’t matter how good you are, you’ll not survive a group of 5. I wanted to yell, fight me one at a time you punks, but when the rolls are reversed, and I’m in a group taking stragglers, it just feels like they are in the wrong place.

Maybe that’s the secret. Don’t go up against groups you have no chance to survive. Hmm, that’s not always true. Sometimes your job is to delay that group. Ok, here is the beginning of my BG rules.

1) Don’t die - unless there is a tactical reason.

Anyway, we lost terribly. I was Horde high score with 4 kills. That’s pitiful.

<rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf="http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#" xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:trackback="http://madskills.com/public/xml/rss/module/trackback/"> <rdf:Description rdf:about="http://www.whirly.org/wow-im-not-so-smart-as-if-i-needed-proof/" dc:identifier="http://www.whirly.org/wow-im-not-so-smart-as-if-i-needed-proof/" dc:title="WoW: I’m not so smart, as if I needed proof" trackback:ping="http://www.whirly.org/wow-im-not-so-smart-as-if-i-needed-proof/trackback/" /> </rdf:RDF>

WoW: My excuse for not writing
Posted in on October 11th, 2006

10-19 battleground (BG) doesn’t lend itself to stories. You win, you lose. With the pick up groups (PUGs) I’ve gotten lately it’s been mostly losing. With my side stacked with 10s and 14s and the other with, what seems to be, guilds there isn’t much hope. Occasionally there is a bright spot though. I was in a BG with 5 priests the other day. I recommend it highly if you have the chance. Heals for everybody and chain fears, it was a class act.

Usually, PUG BG are chaotic and unorganized. There is little hope for success unless the other side is even more unorganized and untalented. I try to find strong players and assist their efforts. Failing that, I try to make my own opportunities. It can be terribly frustrating fighting an overpowering force, but I’ve never prematurely left a BG. I figure there is something to learn with each effort.

My Rogue twinkage is coming along. I found a superb knife in the AH, 250 gold, which I’ve sent off to my Priest for enchanting. I’m going with Lifestealing which seems the most desired weapon enchant for Rogues, from what I’ve read. I’m still looking for a good off hand weapon. The rest of my gear is getting to be top-end, level 19, stuff.

Mike and I have been working on our duo BG technique with mixed results. When we are able to fight our-way things go well. Unfortunately, the other side seem unwilling to line up to die, very annoying. Mark is bringing up a Mage to join us. I have no idea how a Rogue/Hunter/Mage will work out. Perhaps a different 3 would be better. Maybe 3 Priests. You got to love Mage sheeps though.
